June 16 2008 , Bell Air R/C Flyers Meeting
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:30 at the field. President Kelvin Buck welcomed the 30 members and guests and presented the items for the monthly raffle. Several new members have joined the club since the last meeting, bringing total membership to about 70. The treasurer reported on the Big Bird finances. In spite of the fluky weather, the event made money, and came out in the black. The club treasury is still in good order. Details can be supplied on request. The May meeting was summarized by Kelvin.
Old Business: Kelvin thanked all who helped setting up and running the Big Bird event. The event had a good turn out in spite of the weather. There were 23 pilots, lots of spectators and flying that went on during the breaks in the rain.
New Business: Gerry Becker presented details for the next events; ‘War Birds Over Whatcom’ on Saturday August 2 nd and a general all bird fly in on Sunday, August 3 rd. ‘Wings Embroidery’ and ‘Hobby Town’ plan to have booths at the event. Space for these vendors needs to be considered. Lunch time demos are planned for both days. On Saturday Gerry proposed a fly by of all the war birds if possible and a 3D demonstration by John Vanderhage and Ken Huber on Sunday. Gerry has a deal going with “Wings Embroidery” for hats and T shirts with the War bird design, selling for $15 each. He sent a sign up sheet around for advance orders. He has prizes lined up for the events from several vendors. The ‘ North Puget Sound Big Bird Fly-in’ is coming up July 18 thru the 20 th at the Concrete Washington Airport . The event, sponsored by the Skagit County R/C Club, is open to all.
Miscellaneous: Runway repair was discussed. Jerry McLean may have patching material left form the last repair and he will check on it. New chairs are needed due to breakage. The uneven ground subjects them to unusual stress, so care is needed in placing them. Under the heading of safety, a gasoline powered model reportedly had an exploding battery pack at the Big Bird event. Thanks to quick action of those concerned, a potential disaster was avoided. Jerry McLean, our resident engine expert, discussed the care and feeding of model engines, and how to look for potential problems.
The Museum open house will be on June 21.
The meeting adjourned at 7:05 , minutes recorded by Jim Bradshaw. |
