RADIO CONTROL
FLIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM
Fellow Radio Control Flyer,
Welcome to our clubs R/C flight-training program! As a new member you
are entitled to participate in an excellent TRAINING PROGRAM designed
to introduce you to the fun filled world of radio control flight. Our
club maintains a list of Qualified Instructors, able, willing, and ready
to assist you in every possible manner. Whether you wish primary or advanced
flight instruction, physical inspection of your airplane or advice, these
people are ready to help. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK! Your progress through
the training program is proportionate to your enthusiasm and willingness
to ask for help. If you have any questions concerning our club-training
program you may call our Program Director or any Club Official.
All flight training instructors have three primary areas of concern;
First and primary concern is for your SAFETY and the SAFETY of all others
at the flying site. Second concern is to PROTECT your airplane and other
personal property at the flying site. Third concern is to TEACH you to
fly. The goal of this program is to produce SAFE COURTEOUS, COMPETENT
R/C PILOTS and have FUN while learning.
Note: Every effort will be made to assign each student to one instructor.
This will provide continuity of training and will decrease the time required
to re-establish training levels of performance. The instructor can also
plan training sessions directly with the student for those non-scheduled
training days when the instructor will be at the flying site.
You will be expected to participate on a regular basis and ask for
any additional assistance you may require. There are two things as a student
you must remember; One, the decision to enter the program is yours. The
individuals who provide instructions will do their very best to insure
accident-free instruction. Should an accident occur, the Instructor assumes
no liability for your Aircraft. Two, the instructor will respond in an
emergency, to safeguard the life and limb of all present. The instructor
will take whatever corrective action deemed necessary to ensure flight
safety.
THE TRAINING PROGRAM FLIGHT LOG
You will be given a Flight Log at the beginning of the program to monitor
your progress through the program. It is MANDATORY that the student brings
the Log to each Flying Session and that all entries are maintained. After
each session the instructor will initial and date the appropriate space
provided to verify the level of competency before the student can progress
to the next level of instruction. The Log will allow any new instructor
to determine the student's level of training. You must also be prepared
to advise a new instructor of your experience level. A new instructor
may also ask you to complete the maneuvers of the previous flight level.
The training program includes five levels designed to teach you to
fly quickly, safely and competently. The main thrust of any training program
must be directed towards the final level of competence in the skill being
taught. In your case, it is the "SOLO" of a RADIO CONTROL MODEL
AIRPLANE. Attaining that final skill level is not a giant leap that can
be taught at the first training session but, instead, is the fitting together
of an associated series of intermediate attainable skills, each of increasing
difficulty. The following is a list of the Flight Levels:
FLIGHT LEVEL I
The first level of instruction is NON-FLYING. The instructor will show
you the necessary ingredients for a thorough aircraft preflight inspection
and will check your aircraft for AIRWORTHINESS. It will be your responsibility
thereafter to demonstrate the preflight before each training session.
An instructor will suggest that structural or installation improvements
be made prior to flight. Even if this means a lost training session, HIS
ADVICE MUST BE HEEDED. The instructor is acting from experience and any
attempt to fly could result in loss of the aircraft or be a possible safety
hazard.
FLIGHT LEVEL II
This is the beginning of the in-flight portion of your training for
which you've long awaited. After having read and understood the Rules
/ Regulations of the flying field, as well as becoming aware of Field
Etiquette, you are now ready for your first flight lesson. All flights
will be performed in the areas designated by the instructor to assure
aircraft spacing and safety. All efforts must be made to AVOID FLYING
OVER THE PIT AREA OR THE PARKING LOT. The Instructor will now give your
aircraft it's initial flight check prior to having you take the controls
to insure it's airworthiness and trim, after which you will perform the
following maneuvers:
1. Straight and level flight.
2. Left and right hand oval race track pattern.
3. Left and right hand figure eight (8) patterns. With 45 degree intersections.
Once you have demonstrated these maneuvers adequately, you will be able
to advance to the next flight level.
FLIGHT LEVEL III
The activities included in this level are designed to provide better
control and improve precision of the maneuvers. The student will perform
the following maneuvers:
1. Left and right hand oval race track pattern with throttle and altitude
changes.
2. Procedure turn.
3. Left and right hand figure eight (8) pattern with
90 degree intersections.
4. Loop.
FLIGHT LEVEL IV
In preparation for advancement to the final level of instruction you
will be expected to become proficient in the following maneuvers:
1. Taxi and takeoff.
2. Slow flight, while maintaining altitude and airspeed control utilizing
throttle.
3. Stall recovery including recovery from unusual attitudes.
4. Demonstrate traffic pattern and approach procedures while at pattern
altitude to include low approaches over the runway. No touch down!
FLIGHT LEVEL V
This is the flight level we have been aiming for. We will now work on
your ability to land the airplane. It is strongly recommended when this
level is attained, the instructor and student now arrange additional and
concentrated flight instruction. Flight training will now be conducted
at a lower altitude where transfer of control of the aircraft between
student and instructor becomes difficult. The student must be thoroughly
capable of controlling the aircraft and initiating a missed approach,
unassisted. The maneuvers required for Flight Level V include:
1. Traffic pattern and landing.
2. Touch-and-go landing.
3. Forced landing, throttle at idle.
4. Dead stick landing, engine cut-off.
5. Solo flight (Non-assisted)
We hope this training program has provided you with the skills necessary
to safely control a model aircraft at the same time building and enjoying
new friendships. This is your program and you are the reason for its existence.
If you have any, questions or suggestions for improvements, as you continue
through your training, please notify one of the instructors or club officials.
Please obey all rules and regulations of the flying field
